Managing The
Guestbook
To add the guestbook to any
page, use inclusion code %%include-bbguestbook%%
and set up the main cofiguration file which is enabled by default
on every website set up.
The guestbook has improved
security over older versions so spammers wont fill up your pages
with bogus ads and offensive material. By default, all ads are
stored until you read them and either approve or remove them. You
can edit and remove current posts.
To configure the guestbook
click on "Manage Programs" then under Manage
Guestbook, you will see links to change colors and settings,
approve and remove pending posts and edit or remove current posts.
Setting And Colors
Display Page Setup - There
are 2 basic display types. A single color seperated by a
horizontal line or a block with a head or title color, body color
and a border. You can choose either and change them at any time
if you want to update your look.
Choose The Colors
- Choose the clors that corespond to the display type you have
selected.
Display Posts
- Choose the number of comments you want displayed on a single
page.
Display Date
- Select if you want to include the date that the comment was
posted. If you have lots of traffic this is great, but if you
only get a few posts a year you wont want to share that detial.
Date Format -
If you do wish to date each comment, then you can choose how that
date will be formatted. There are 3 baisc formats listed below,
simply choose the one that best suits your website. Date formats
can also be changed at any time or removed if you later decide
not to use the date display.
HTML - It is
not recomended that you allow anyone to post HTML on your website.
The default prevents any html coding in the comments, howerver
you can enable the use of html if you desire.
Use Smileys -
You can let users post emoticons in the comments by allowing the
use of smileys. You can also select the smiley set from a gallery
so the smileys will match your website or theme. A nice fetaure
of the smileys is that you can change smiley sets at any time and
it will update your entire guestbook.
Sign the Guestbook
Link - If you want an automatic link displayed to allow
users to sign your guestbook make sure you select to "Include
Link". If you remove the link, you will need to create a
link someplace if you want users to be able to leave you comments.
If you use the automated link, you can specify what the link will
say. Include your own text and the program will link that text to
the page to post comments.
Thank You Message
- After someone posts a comment, a thank you message will appear
on the page. You can specify what that message will say, give
instructions or thank them for leaving a comment.
Word Filter -
The word filter will remove any offensive words in a comment.
This is particularly useful if you are autoposting comments and
not reviewing them. You can specify a list of words you do not
want to appear in your comments.
Automating Posts
- You can either have all posted saved for your approval or allow
the comments to post automatically. We do not recomend allowing
autoposts, but we give you the option should you wish to shoot
yourself in the foot.
Max Daily Posts
- If you allow auto posting, you can limit the number of posts
any single person can post in a single day. This will keep your
spam at a minimum and prevent over posting.
Size of posts
- Limit the number of words that any single user can post in a
single comment. The maximum is 200 words but you can trim that
depending on how much detail you want users to share. Larger
comments will crowd the guestbook and make pages more difficult
to load.
CAPTCHA - It
is highly recomended that you use the captcha feature. This will
include a verification image preventin automated carwlers and
spam bots from posting comments in your guestbook.
The security features are all
provided. If you choose to eliminate them then any spammer will
be able to flood your guestbook with ads for any products,
website or scam. Make sure if you disable security features you
are prepared for the consequences.
Approve / Remove
Guestbook Posts - All posts will be stored for you to
approve before they are posted live on your pages. Clicking the
approve / remove link will list all of the pending submissions.
You can approve, hold or edit each of the comments at any time.
Remove Guestbook Posts - Lists
all comments in the guestbook that are posted on your website.
You will see a radio button next to each to hold or remove. You
can select as many or as few as you want to remove and update the
guestbook removing those comments.
There is also a link by each to edit the
comments. If you missed an offensive word or realized you did not
want some of the text to appear on your website you can edit any
part of the comment.
