The Shopping Cart - Renaming A Category

You can rename categories in the shopping cart.

Click > Shoping Cart
Click >[Rename-Category]
Select the category to rename from the drop down menu
Type the new name in the text box
Submit

The category is renamed. Make sure if you have links in the pages to the old category you change them accordingly. If you are using te shopping cart as is, then your work is done.

NOTE: Although you can change any category name at any time, you should consider that your items could already be listed in the search engines. If you have had the items on the website for any length of time, they are likely listed in google. Changing the name will change the url of the page and effectively remove all the pages or item pages in that category from the searches.

If you just made the category and made a mistake,there is little to think about. But, if you are expecting search traffic and change the name you could loose that opportunty.

Don't be afraid to change the category name, just understand the implications of chaning names. You can relate it to having a business for several years and then changing the phone number. If you have been handing out business cards for years, many people may try to call your old number.

The search engines will try to verify the page and find it missing and remove it from their index. Eventually the search will index the new page, but that will likely be several months at best. If you make a habit of chaning names, it could be bad for business.
