Adding
& Managing your Web Ring
What
is a WebRing?
A webring is a
method of linking a large number of sites
together in group. Visitors can surf the ring and
enjoy the content of members. Its a way to share
traffic and get referals. Its one of the biggest
traffic generating tools available.
There are many
remotely hosted systems such as https://webring.com that allow you to sign up and use
their programs, however you will be sending all
traffic to them and their ads.
By using your
own site as the main hub, you get the benefit of
the traffic and can avoid the ads and redirects
that are associated with remotely hosted rings.
So how do you
get started?
You can add
the webring to any page using the inclusion code:
%%include-webring%%
Once the page
is up, you will need to sign up at your own
website to include your site in the ring, which
you most likely will want to do. So just go to
the page you just set up.
As the
Administrator, you will now need to access your
website management console and approve the site
to be added to the webring. In the future, you
will need to approve all sites before they are
added into the ring, so this is great practice.
When you
approve any website, an e-mail will be sent to
the site owner stating the acceptance into the
ring and instructions for adding the code to
their pages.
Now, as the
new member, follow the instructions sent to you
and go to the main webring page.
Login with the
username and pass you just set up and you will
see the code to include in your page.
Copy the html
code into any of your pages and save the page.
If done
correctly you should see a box like the one shown
below.
Your Web Ring Name |

Home |
Your
box will actually link to member sites and keep
track of click thrus for members and visitors to
view. The home link will take them to the main
hub, your website, to see the entire member list
and stats. Therefore, every member links directly
back to your website, a huge benefit of being the
ring owner.
To add members
to the webring, have them go to your webring
page, that is the page you set up the webring on.
They can sign
up just as you have, past the code in their page
and become one of the sites on your hub.
This is
definetly a must if you have a hobby website or a
place you really want to share your passion with
other people having the same interests. Not so
great for business websites since you will often
redirect traffic to competitors.
To
approve sites and remove sites from the
ring. Simply access the webring management link
from your main management page. You will be able
to remove dead sites or sites that violate your
rules.
We strongly
suggest you post the rules of your ring on one of
your pages. This will prevent people from getting
involved in your ring if they are not compliant.
For examply,
if you run a fishing webring, you do not want
telemarketers signing up and wasting your time
declining them.
