What is a WIDGET?
The term widget is used to
reperesent a function that has no serious commercial application.
However, these widgets can offer some user interaction in your
pages. Widgets include calcuators, number converters, time and
date clocks and even user identification.
The widgets are all Javascript
based, so they are not going to work on 100% of the computers 100%
of the time. They can be fun, but you would never want your
shopping cart or credit cards running on widget codes.
Still, with growing numbers of
people building their own websites, we have added a widet section
that will allow you to easily add widgets to your pages using one
of our inclusion codes.
The widget codes are %%widget-somecode%%.
Some widgets can be added into
sentances to show the time of day or the number of times someone
has visited your web page.
For example I add to my page:
Today is %%widget-textdate%%
and you have visited my website %%widget-numvisits%%
times.
The actual page would display
something like:
Today is Someday of Somemonth
of 2007 and you have visited my website 3 times.
(note the widget is not
running in this help page, so it is just an example, yours would
show the actual date or time)
Widgets wont make you more
money, but they can make your site more interesting and fun. They
can also add functionality to a website by adding tools that
people can use for reference.
For example one widget allows
users to convert standard units to metric units. Another allows
users to calculate how many calories they burned in a workout.
If one of thses widgets falls
into the content of your website it can be a powerful tool for
getting users to your pages and giving them a reason to come back
for information.
Of course you are always free
to add your own code to the pages and skip the widget code
completely. However, the widget code is a simple way to add many
lines of code to a page without knowing anymore than what you
want the page to do.
Keep in mind that many
browsers have been modified to block widgets or are in computers
with such heavy security that they wont function correctly.
Widgets are named widgets because they are fun, but can't always
be expected to work based on adjustments individuals make to
their own computers.
